Love is in the Air

It's been two weeks since our last blog post and a lot has happened at The Children's Academy.  There has been a snow day, a Valentine's Day celebration, and much in between.  Below you will see images of all our classrooms in a variety of areas.  I hope you enjoy them!

MATH

LANGUAGE
Working with "k", the sound of the week.

The famous movable alphabet combined with pink work found in the language area.

PRACTICAL LIFE

Soap shaving is great for refining fine motor skills... and it smells really good, too.
The students below are preparing their own snacks, fostering independence, enhancing fine motor skills, and enjoying a treat simultaneously.

This image is a true representation of the cliche, "A picture is worth a thousand words."  In true Montessori fashion, the silent presentation of an activity had every child's attention, without the use of any audible direction.

SCIENCE/CULTURAL

An experiment involving density makes these students aware of the properties of water and oil.

In honor of Presidents Day, children participated in an experiment involving pennies and oxidation. What solution made President Lincoln's face the shiniest?  Vinegar!

SENSORIAL

Knobless cylinders can be used in a multitude of ways.

The pair below worked with this activity for a very long time, and that is okay!  Look at all they were able to accomplish with patience, cooperation, and the freedom of trial and error.

Geometric solids are great to explore with a partner.

MISCELLANEOUS

Sensorial?  Art?  Whatever it was, there was a ton of fun in the Little Room.  Just look at those faces!

There were several birthdays celebrated within the past week.  I wasn't able to snap a photo of every celebrating face, but we wish every student a very happy birthday!  Below are a couple of images I was able to capture of some of our birthday stars.  If you haven't heard of our Montessori birthday celebration routine, be sure to ask your child.  They'll tell you alllll about it! :)

VALENTINE'S DAY

We are all very grateful of all the volunteers and generous gifts/treats received for The Children's Academy Valentine's Day Celebration.  The children had an amazing experience and it was wonderful to see them so happy.  Love was certainly in the air!

Until our next post, I wish everyone a happy holiday weekend.  We hope our students enjoy their winter break.  See you soon, Children's Academy family!

February Fun

This week the students of The Children's Academy enjoyed their work while beginning a new month.  February reminds us of love, friendship, and fun.  Below you will see children enjoying all three!

PRACTICAL LIFE

Serving snack helps promote independence and motor skills while allowing children to practice a daily life skill.  This week, students sampled peppers, comparing both color and taste.

Working with screwdrivers is a useful way to strengthen fine motor skills... and learn to help around the house :)

Lacing is a wonderful fine motor skill strengthening activity.

MATH

Bead work of all kinds is a versatile staple in the math section of the classroom.
Counting hearts is a festive way to reinforce number recognition and the concept of quantity.

LANGUAGE

The movable alphabet is an integral part of the language area, allowing children to not only recognize letters but also how their sounds come together to form words.  Vowels are red, consonants are blue.  This can be combined with pink, blue, and green work too.  Hey, that rhymed!

Cubes such as the ones above and below are used in a variety of ways.  They can be utilized to reinforce letter recognition, vowel/consonant awareness, and create words, all while strengthening fine motor skills.

SENSORIAL
Partners are a great asset when working with Red Rods.

What better way to explore texture than to get messy with shaving cream?!

ART

 Exploring their inner artists!

 They heart art!

SCIENCE/CULTURAL

While not exactly a science, Groundhog Day is certainly a cultural event!  There has been some debate in the groundhog community about whether or not there will be six more weeks of winter, but Academy students enjoyed learning about the special day.

Someone saw their shadow :)

Happy Super Bowl Weekend, Academy Family!  See you next week.
